I've never really heard of a monthly donation to an old high school...I would like to add an inquiry to Carlton. Most odd. And I also tend to eat a LOT of Taco Bell. Perhaps the greatest fast food place ever. I could, probably, eat there every day and be happy. Would you be healthy, though?

It's all your fault. Because of this tread, I decided I had to have Taco Bell for lunch!

My wife, 8 mo. old baby, and I live on $250-$300 for food/other stuff from a grocery store. We spend a little over $1600 on our mortgage. The food is as low as it is becuase we almost never eat out (maybe once a month, though lately more like once every other month) and buy a lot of raw ingredients and do our own cooking. It works pretty well.
To comment on other people's posts: Brendan, my college days were very similar. James, I cannot fathom spending as much as you do every month. You must have a very well paying job. Carlton, donating to your old school is weird, but good for you. Taco Bell never fills me.
The end.

You people with your Taco Bell... I'll never understand it!
Vile, vile stuff. Almost as hellish as Arby's.

I remember when I saw Jon a while ago he mentioned that for him it was almost cheaper to eat out than to do a lot of cooking at home. Maybe I misunderstood/misheard him. I think it depends, of course, on what you are cooking, and what you would be eating out.

I don't have any firm figures about this, but it does seem to me to be cheaper for me to go and buy something to eat from somewhere than it is for me to go to the grocery store and buy all the ingredients I would need to make said meal.

Taco Bell is disgusting. In some circles, it's an ongoing joke to ask "Oh, you had Taco Bell?" whenever someone says they aren't feeling good. The fries at Arby's are damn good. The "Market Fresh" or whatever you call it are decent too. But a Roast Beef Sandwich - fuck no!
I am still curious as to why in the name someone would waste a hundred dollars a month by donating to his/her old high school. Also - do you and your wife split the mortgage, Christopher? 1600 seems like a lot for a young person (not some old coot like Southall) to pay for mortgage alone.

I think the reason this is true is because people who frequently cook constantly stockpile months in advance and have a whole shelve of spices and sauces and what not. They also buy stuff like sugar, backing oil, flour, etc of which I never buy. Also, it's not much more expensive to buy fast food than to buy an easily prepared meal (ie throw it in the microwave kind of deal) from the grocery store.

Well, I suppose some people cook themselves because they enjoy it. I doubt it's solely a money-saving affair.

If you do fancy cooking it's actually more expensive, but with a bit of basing "meal-preparing" cooking is a lot cheaper than eating out, even at the cheap places.

The fries at Arby's are damn good. The "Market Fresh" or whatever you call it are decent too. But a Roast Beef Sandwich - fuck no! Now we know why you save the $1000 per month. It isn't to buy a BMW in the future, but to be able to afford Arby's!! It's like $6 for a frickin' sandwich there. What about Applebee's? Does anyone DO that? I do carside to go and get the crispy orange chicken bowl, but that is ten dollars, plus I give the person a couple dollar tip that brings my food to the car. So, in the end it's way too expensive. Not to mention the gas I burn just to drive there. Applebee's is pretty much glorified fast food anyway. Not much different than Arby's. -Nate
