This movie is awful, however I do recommend it seeing as I came out of it and decided to give Indy 4 a second run and loved it this time around. I assume this was due to the awfulness of the Shyamalan film. It makes you appreciate all the little (and big) things that make other films so much better.
So, go see it, and then go watch a movie you want to like. It'll work like a charm.

I think the man is capable of making good movies, but his last 3 are so damn terrible I am considering skipping the next one entirely. Also, Zooey Deschanel. She's cute.
This film is a gem, really. It has: no story; no acting; it features "deadly grass" and "deadly wind" with scenes of characters running from the invisible, "deadly wind" (which rivals Mummy Returns' scenes of running from the sun); gratuitous, crazy, elderly lady for good measure; and most of it reminds me of Professor's Farnsworth's line while inside Fry's nostrils, "Nobody make a smell". And it's hilarious. For some reason, the deaths in this film are very graphic, but I know all I wanted to do was laugh to the top of my lungs. The scene where the zookeeper offers himself to the lion gets me just by thinking about it.
Good stuff.

Nothing has been worse this summer than Indy 4.
Nothing.
Not even The Happening was that bad, although perhaps my expectations were so low going into Shyamalan's newest movie, I couldn't help but be a little surprised.
The more I think about Crystal Skull, the more my brain hurts.

The important distinction to me, Jocko, is that I fully expected The Happening to suck and that I couldn't care less either way. However, I care about Indiana Jones. He's one of my favorite characters ever, and the old movies and even the TV series are staples of my childhood. Hence, while it probably wasn't the worst movie of the year, it is the one that hurts the most to me.
Yes, The Happening was awful. Just as awful as I knew it would be. Who cares?

I know folks (i.e. Cheno) always accuse me of quoting others rather than gathering my own thoughts, but I don't care. This description from the Spoony message board needs to be read, dammit:

Let us remember this movie also caused Clark's car to crash, another perfectly valid reason to hate it and gang up on it.
Talk about Marky Mark: he sings to those people. This causes the family head to off the children with the shotgun. That's how bad he sings.

Huh. I didn't read that thread because I expected it to be about general superstitions or the Friday the 13th movie series or some shit.
I also now blame Shyamalan for Clark's misfortune.

I still think it's the worst movie I've seen all year, though... doesn't mean there haven't been worse. In concurrence with your sentiments, it hurt greatly to see such a wonderful childhood hero and favorite film icon treated so... miserably when he was finally able to grace the silver screen again after nearly two decades. Hell, Sex and the City might be a good candidate for the worst movie of the year thus far, for all I know. I simply refuse to sit through such tripe. -Jockolantern

Ok, to be fair, it might have also been the munchies or The Incredible Hulk, but I'm pretty sure it was The Happening. Technically, it was both films. Thus, we must also place the blame on Louis Leterrier for Clark's misfortune. HULK SMASH CLARK CAR! -Jockolantern

I think Jocko that, should you ever see it, you'll find The Hottie and the Nottie to be the worst movie of the year. Though I predict this will come pretty close as well. I know, I know, you were only talking about films you've seen. Just wanted an excuse to mention these. Also, I see everything. (And Sex and the City wasn't awful)
