Did you watch the movie yet? No, I haven't been able to get to the movie yet. I hope to soon, though! I will enjoy your assessment of your favorite characters after you watch the film.

It's a good film (better than the Star Wars prequels and most trash nowadays that gets much larger budgets), but prepared to be disappointed Emily. Not nearly as great as the show. And some things will definitely feel *off*. Other things are excellent. Yavar

So.....basically I'll be disappointed and probably won't like my favorite characters anymore? I'm not really eager to see the film if that's the case.

The film is fun...not quite the same tone as the show, but if you like the show, you'll like the movie without a doubt. I think Yavar is just trying to be mysterious with his reference and tease parts of the movie. I watched Firefly the same as you: all episodes in the course of 4 or 5 days and then watched the movie immediately after that. I think it made for a great and satisfying experience. A really good show! -Brendan

Serenity is good, and you should see it. It's just a poor substitute for a more drawn-out continuation of the show which it should have gotten. Maybe my negative comments will lower your expectations enough that when you see it, you'll be pleasantly surprised! On the other hand, my expectations were high and were disappointed. But you should see the film -- Chiwetel Ejiofor's character is awesome. And if you're a River fan, you *must* see the film. The continuation of her story is handled great. Yavar

Chris' question made me laugh. I wouldn't worry too much about it right now, Emily.
I thought Serenity was really fun, and wasn't disappointed at all. I still had issues with it, mainly because of the sacrifices Joss Whedon had to make to fit a multi-season story arc into a 2 hour movie, but I was happy with it.

Also, there was much less emphasis on the funny dialogue which made the series so charming. Fewer character moments. Had to move the story along, I guess. But Kaylee comes off fairly two dimensional (her primary attribute in this film is "horny"), Simon seems reverted (especially his relationship with Mal) to the pilot episode, and Inara doesn't seem to be in the film for much more of a reason besides she's pretty and was a main character on the show. After her (admittedly cool) re-introduction, she doesn't play a large part in the rest of the story. BUT SEE IT, EMILY. And if anyone here gets into Farscape, they should watch the Peacekeeper Wars miniseries at the end, even though I have similar issues with it. Yavar

I just got through Farscape. Excellent series as well.
I saw Serenity in the cinema before checking out the series. It might ahve taken some of the mystery the serie was supposed to create away, but I was pleasantly suprised by the fact that the series was actually even better. That is not to say the movie is bad, so simply go and watch it!
Btw. does anybody own the Serenity DVD? Does the US version also have Chinese menu, or is it just the Chinese release? I almost couldn't find the audio menu. ;D

Yavar, quit giving away more of the movie and just let her watch it! -Brendan p.s. the continuation of River's story was good, yes, but at the same time I was hoping it would connect more to her back-story from the show (two by two, hands of blue, etc.)

The Hands of Blue stuff was explained in the comic. It also explains how Book got to be where he was.

I thought the film was excellent. That's coming from a guy who has only seen part of one episode of Firefly. The dialogue in the film was awesome. It may not be as good as it was in the series, but compared to the dialogue of almost every other film that came out that year, and last year, Serenity was fantastic. I was confused about who Inara was, and why she was there, though.

You. Must. Buy. The. Series.
You can find it for twenty bucks -- the complete show! Go get it now, silly. If you though the dialogue in the film was great, the show is going to blow you away!

Well to be fair in this case I doubt we'd either have the film OR the comic at this point if only Joss Whedon had been allowed to make his damn SHOW like he wanted to! Then he could have told the rest of his story(ies) at the pace they deserved in the medium they deserved. Since he loves his universe, he's going to get us more even if he's not able to continue it in its original incarnation.
