The Constitution says nothing about the "right to die," only the right to live so I guess I don't understand this obsession with death. We live. We die. It's that simple. I don't understand why Christains are so obssesed with death, when they are so certain they are going to heaven.
I also don't understand the uproar over this one case. I was somewhat aware of it, (it's been around for awhile), but I really hadn't been following this case, until this Monday when my friend fowarded me an e-mail response, he got for trying to point out an error, in a Newspaper, regarding this case. He wrote to the Editor: "Try reading it a fifth time (sometimes the fifth or sixth time is the charm). 53 Democrats voted no, as did 5 Republicans. You inverted the number of Republicans and democrats voting no.... It would be a rather significant story if 53 Republicans voted against this bills. ;D
Anyway, as I pointed out to my friend, I haven't been following this case very well. I'm not familiar with the facts of this case, and the role Congress has played in this case. In my reply to friend, I did a quick brainstorm about our previous conversations and what I though about the whole "right to live and die" issue. Hopefully my reply will help you to understand my anger over this case (and those slime balls). Here's my initial reply:
"...I know that my previous comments indicate I support the right to die naturally, but my desire to prolong my own death, is turning me into Hamlet- a character known for his indecision. ("That dread of something after death, puzzles the will rather than make us bear those ill'we know not of.)
I'm undecided because I support the Right to Live and the Right to Die. Maybe, I've been brainwashed by the media and their relentless coverage of the Scott Peterson Case, but I think Peterson (and juveniles) deserves the right to live, whereas Terry Schiavo right to live is another question, since she doesn't have access to her own right to die. She just can't blow her brains out like Hunter Thompson, and if the husband is paying the bills (and the family can't), he has the right to treat his wife like she was Laci Peterson...
In the end, Schiavo's doctors are going to have to become Million Dollar Babies (by injecting her with death), unless Her and her family have enough money to keep the feeding tubes going. If Terry truly wanted to live it becomes a troublesome issue, since some people have money to keep the food flowing and other's do not. The ability to access the Right to Live is fueled by the "the whips and scorns" of money, so in the end Terry Schiavo is probably going to have to suffer the slings and arrows of an outrageous fortune; She is going to have to die naturally."
As you can see in my reply I think this case is an unfortunate situation. Since I've been following in the news, I 'I' ve been disguisted about the amount of hypocrisy been thrown down the tubes. A prime example of this is Bush's comment that "It is Wisest to Always Err on the Side of Life." Where was this guy when the Assault Weapon Ban expired, how many people did this guy execute in Texas (he probably still want's to execute juveniles), where is his National Health Insurance plane (at least Hillary Clinton had the balls to try to come up with one), and so forth. Does Bush's suggested Environmental laws and other policies (like his nonsupport for Stem Cell Research) really err on the side of life? It is Hypocritical Bulls***. If you want to see and smell the worst of it, Go here and look at this. Tell's me that's not a bunch of hypocritical bulls***.
Plus, the U.S. Senate did a voice vote and supposedly there were only a couple who voted nay, so that means the Democrats also supported Schiavo's chance to live. Only half of the house wasn't too lazy to come back and vote and 47 Democrats voted with the Republicans. So I guess those Democrats are jackasses too?
There is a reason why Dem's didn't go back to the house and vote, and there is also a reason why other Democrats haven't been vocal on this issue: "It is because their f***ing politicians" Now, I don't want to get into a whole was congress wrong to do this issue because I think congress DOES have the power to do things like subpoenaing baseball players and intervening in judicial cases, now matter how misguided I think they might be. Hell, If I was congressman I would have voted yes (or I would have been a no-show). I think Frist (a physician) and De Lay (an asshole) are jackasses because they are hypocrites. If they were really concerned, they would already come up with legislation dealing with patient's rights and end of life decisions- Similar to this one that Bush signed
Also, if you hate these congressmen because of that "memo" that was circulating you better change your mind because it has proven to be false.
I can care less abot memo's. Parties have rights to put out memo's. If it was not an offical party memo, then whoever put it out should be ashamed of themselves... I am not basing my hate on a memo, I 'm basing it on hypocrisy ;D
The only thing I remember a Democrat saying was if Congress voted to save Schiavo it would ruin the sanctity of marriage, because we all know Mr. Schiavo believes in the sanctity of marriage by having an affair on his crippled wife.
This is case is about more than a lame husband. Like abortion, this case is about the right to choose. Should people have the right to chose to have an abortion, should people have the right to choose that they do not want to live? As it stands, Mr. Schiavo has the right to say, I don't want to pay (the bills) to keep Terry on life-support- pull the plug. Call him all kinds of name, it is his legal right.
If Terri had a living will and said that she did not want to kept alive with feeding tubes, would you have still supported her right to die? Personally, this is a difficult issue for me. I think "euthanasia" is very problematic, and think the "right to life" is unfortunately a money driven issue. Should hospitals be required to keep patients "alive" no hatter what their condition is or how much it would cost the state? Part of my anger is derived from a by quote from Stalin (to Truman): "When one person dies, it is a tragedy. When millions die, it just a statistic" I'm upset because it seems like many hypocrites share this philosophy.
Mr. Schiavo is a psychopath and I hope his new "wife" doesn't die sometime soon. He is so obsessed with Terri to die that he is obviously making sure they is no evidence left behind to implicate his involvement in her condition (AKA strangling her). There was evidence of broken bones in her neck, etc. that supposedly caused "homicide" investigators to get involved. He also doesn't want an autopsy after she dies, but immediately burn her body. I have no clue if any of this is true, but Mr. Schiavo doesn't help himself by having an affair, etc., etc.
This another reason why I'm upset. If you have"no clue if any of this is true," why the heck are you presuming that is correct. Why are you unjustly demonizing Mr. Schiavo? What if he's telling the truth, "My wife does not want the feeding tube"... I was guilty of doing a similar thing in my initial reply to my friend, but it is not a honest thing to do....
Plus, if you have A&E you should watch the Terri Schiavo story. It has tons of cripples on it that were worse than her and can now talk normally and get around normally. Supposedly 45% of people are misdiagnosed as vegetables according to this show. I don't think A&E is a bastion for conservatism.
Nate, change the channel from The Fox News Channel and A&E, in fact turn off the darn TV, and don't listen to people (slime balls), like Sean Hannity on the Radio. Just go here and READ theFACTS OF THE CASE Sorry if I've been to hard on you, but this is an EMOTIONAL case.
