Hi friends,
I thought it might be helpful to start a Breaking News portal where we can all share the latest news and developments.
So let's get started!

Well, John Williams will be scoring Brian Percival's "The Book Thief" due in January 2014.
How did Spielberg let him go to another director! This is really special. May the Maestro live forever!
All the best!

It would seem that Danny Elfman will be scoring David O Russell's "American Hustle." Hmm, Christian Bale and Amy Adams in a crime suspense thriller. I am looking forward to this.
All the best!

All the best! Recording. As the news was broken by the Music Preparation Services, I think we can assume that the score has been already written

Curious as to how large a role the score will play - with the exception of I Heart Huckabees (which boasts a brilliant Jon Brion score), songs have played a larger role than score in Russell's films. I liked Elfman's Silver Linings Playbook effort well enough, but there certainly wasn't much of it.

As mentioned on the FtScoreboard, Marco Beltrami was just inked to score Seventh Son--due out January 2014. Dark epic fantasy--seems like a great fit for Beltrami to do a lot of different things. www.youtube.com/watch?v=XQt6lYJHIOAand, yes, that is Jeff Bridges.

Yes, but Beltrami's hiring is at the expense of the outstanding Finnish composer Tuomas Kantelinen, whose attempt to re-break in to Hollywood this was supposed to be. I'm massively disappointed it didn't pan out for him.

Interesting. This sort of thing is becoming a common story, huh? Jon, can you recommend something by Kantelinen, since I have no idea what we might be missing?

Pretty much everything Kantelinen has written is superb, but if I were to pick a favorite five I would say:
ARN: TEMPELRIDDAREN - big, heroic, Viking action THE ITALIAN KEY - warm, summery romance MOTHER OF MINE - basically, his Schindler's List QUEST FOR A HEART - lush, expressive orchestral score for an animated film RUKJARVEN TIE - more lyrical, emotional drama writing

I've only heard MOTHER OF MINE, but I'm sorry Kantelinen was passed over. Beltrami has more than enough work.

It's very sad to hear this 'cause Kantelinen's musical abilities are somewhat rare in these days of hollywood film music. Those scores are must-have for any film music lover out there, the ones you mentioned.

I recall listening to a suite from The Italian Key, and enjoyed that a great deal. Curious to hear any of this, and true, perhaps unfortunate he didn't get Seventh Son.

Boden, check out ARN for sure, and MONGOL for starters. You'll love them, and there's the more sentimental, melancholic but always beautiful string-driven writing for Mother of Mine and RUKJARVEN TIE . Also very notable are:THE YEAR OF THE WOLF and THE PROMISE.

I saw Tuomas at the SCL's pre-Oscar party earlier this year, and I told him how surprised (and pleased!) I was to see him there. He was telling me how excited he was to be working on this film, getting to work with A. R. Rahman, and how he was hoping that this would lead to some good things for him after the flop disappointment of MINDHUNTERS years ago - and now this happens. While I like Beltrami a lot, I'm very unhappy on a personal level for Tuomas, because Hollywood needs his voice.
