So, the trailer for Avatar is finally available for viewing on the Internets. What do you guys think? Personally, I am not particularly impressed by the effects work. Even in small web video size, they don't seem particularly convincing. And I don't really like the design of the blue aliens. It's all very... Battle for Terra.

Huh. Slightly less than jaw-dropping, I must admit. That being said, I do like the fact that the trailer gives very little away in terms of plot.

also underwhelmed, but seen it in a youtube version so that doesn´t count. in other news, inglorious basterds is my favorite tarantino movie, and christoph walz will get the oscar. the whole german movie cast steals the show.

Uhm... the aliens are basically blue skinned lanky humans with long ears? Yes, I know there are other slight anatomical differences like in the eyes but they're so close I don't understand the approach here. For one thing, wouldn't it have saved like the GNP of a small country to use some body paint and prosthetics instead of CGIing every last alien shot (maybe not, what do I know)? But more importantly: the human mind and eye knows how the human body looks and moves when it is alive in the real world. Unless your CGI near-humans are perfect, you're setting yourself up for an entire movie of uncanny valley picnics. Can't say the teaser fills me which much optimism about that. But, we shall see, I suppose.

I'm interested. Looks like it has a lot of potential to me. The effects looked good on the site that I watched it on. Is there any chance that they will continue to work on them until the movie comes out, or do they only use finished product shots in trailers?
More than anything, this film looks like it could give Horner some great scenes to score: lots of action, presumably some serious story, alien world, etc. I must admit I'm getting my hopes up. That said, it will probably be bicentennial man in another key...

i just talked to a friend who saw the 16min 3-d preview in IMAX. his verdict was " don´t even bother with the trailer". the footage and effect were mindblowing, the trailer isn´t able to show that. thats what i wanted to hear. james cameron ftw!

I'll see it when I believe it. Until then I remain cautiously pessimistic.

One word: Yuck.
Cameron calls those revolutionary special effects? I call them same old, same old... and even vaguely Saturday Morning cartoonish. Pretty typical, epic sci-fi storytelling going on here, though I still remain curious as to how the stereoscopic 3D imagery will help the film itself. Or not.
Horner's score, I imagine, will be the same damn thing we've been hearing from him for the past decade. Yawn, snore.

Oh sure, let us judge the hearsay of unnamed strangers rather than official marketing footage provided by the filmmakers. That's a great idea. My imaginary friend Jarrow T. Flakfeizer, who can see up to six months into the future, told me this movie was mediocre at best. His opinion is at least as valid.

I am beginning to detest movie "trailers". Why not be bold and daring and say "®ÃëÆ the damn trailers!" - and just go see the freakin' movie.
NO MORE TRAILERS!! NO MORE HINTS!! NO MORE SPOILERS!! NO MORE CRUELLERS!!
Previews are okay, though.

Hm, okay.. that looked A LOT more 'fantasy' than I thought it was gonna be. Looked a bit like the Elfs from LOTR vs Starship Troopers. Not sure what to think now.

Everything looked awesome at first, but I too was turned off when I saw the blue creatures. It seemed like it would be breathtaking and epic until it got all Ferngully.
One thing which I don't understand is why they used "The Director of Titanic" instead of naming one of his sci-fi movies. That's pretty funny...
