I remember when Stone blamed the bombing Alexander took on the right-wing for being homophobes. Had nothing to do with the film being absolutely crap.

Frankly, I blame George Bush. If he wasn't so dumb, we could have more high brow political satire about him. ;D

What exactly are you trying to say? Exactly what I wrote, and what Jens already explained. It just seemed to be the best example. Right now I'm following the "should women be allowed into the church" discussion in the anglican/catholic churches, the "God told me to invade Iraq" idea, the "condoms cause Aids to poor Africans" propaganda and a few others. Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with the bible. It's what people, who look at it from their own perspective and with their own agenda, make of it. And what is worrying are the people who, in the same sentence as they ridicule the people who "believed for so long that the Earth was a disc and at the centre of the universe" (btw. a view fully supported by the bible-based church), so these people at the same time trust a book that was written about 2000 years. Anyways - this is the last thing I will say about this topic, and then shut up: the bible is awesome andreligion is awesome. But what people make of it, and especially what A LOT of people make of it, is just plain crap, and sometimes scary. And I've read the bible over many times, myself, heard it, read it to others, talked about it for hours and hours, heard talked about it for hours and hours... so I know what I'm talking about. Nowadays they even teach you when it was written - in the span of about 200 years, with the first (in the chronological sense) of the teestaments written about 100 years after the Jesus events. Now you try to write anything 100 years after it happened... and then you talk again about historical accuracy... That doesn't matter though, as the bible is not about events, but about what is behind it. And that, unfortunately has been open to too many interpretations, many of which were and are less than ideal.

Armin, I hope I didn't offend you. I thought your original post was condemning all who base decisions on their belief in what the Bible teaches, and not just those who misinterpret it to further their own ideals. I agree with you entirely on that point. Scripture itself says that it is not for any private interpretation.
I think we could have a very interesting discussion on how the Bible came to be and historical acuracy, etc., but we'd better not do it in this thread so as not to distract from the enlightening conversation about Oliver Stone's new film...

I don't think Oliver Stone "sucks" (not entirely, anyway)... I just think he's rather crazy. I do admit to really liking some of his films, particularly "Nixon", "JFK" (though again, NOT as historical documents), and "Salvador". On the other hand, this is the guy who gave us "World Trade Center", "Alexander", and "U-Turn"... ugh.
Back at ya later

Platoon, anyone? Great film. I have never understood why everyone got so excited about that film. And that damn music they play every five minutes... great way to kill a classic.

I used to like Stone's films a lot better before I crossed that barrier in the corner of my mind that recognizes how much bull he can come up with. And I'm not talking about the conspiracy thing. I mean how he uses the most mundane and trivial events of a person's life and turn it into a deep, psychological journey of their haunting past. I can't stand watching Nixon now for those reasons.
