With my new-found love of my iPod, I've been pulling out and blowing the dust off some promos and bootlegs I haven't played in a loooooong time. Listening to them, I can't believe I've let them slip from my memory.
So, now that Christmas is over and we've all found our commercially released CDs under the tree, what would you say are some absolute must-have bootleg or promo scores (either because they have never been regularily released or because the music left off the commercial album is just that good)?
Here are some that come to mind:
Troy promo (Yared): the new standard of amazing music that will never see the light of day on store shelves.
Independence Day boothleg (Arnold): How could we possibly survive with a mere sampling of music from the final battle? We needed it ALL!
The Mummy Returns bootleg (Silvestri): The commercial album ommitted ALL of the final Scorpion King battle...quite literally the BEST music from the film.
Godzilla promo (Arnold): two tracks on the commercial album? Please. And even the promo isn't complete with the best music yet...but it's better than nothing.
Mulan promo (Goldsmith): The commercial album was okay, but the academy promo really does tell the whole story musically. Some of Goldsmith's best.
Agent Cody Banks (Powell): this is fantastic action music....too bad it happend to be attached to a tiny-bopper film. Thank goodness for the abundance of Powell promos...
Hook bootleg (Williams): the commercial Hook album is great, yes, but this score is a classic...to have all the extended and alternate versions of cues is a huge treat.
David Newman promos: why won't anyone release this guy's music? My favorite Newman promos include Anastasia, Duck Tales: The Movie and Scooby Doo.
Back to the Future bootleg (Silvestri): The re-recording Varese did of the BTF Trilogy wasn't enough (in length or quality) to make up for the lack of music from the first film. The bootleg gives Silvestri's most famous work its proper time to shine.
Die Another Day bootleg (Arnold): the commercial release of this score was a joke...it had no time to let the structure (or the more purely orchestral cues) of this score show through. The bootleg is a true tour-de-force and proves Die Another Day is easily as good as the previous two Bonds (though I may be a teeny-weeny bit bias ;D ).
Any others? Must-haves? Overlooked gems?

Godzilla, Hook, and Cody Banks definently. I think the The Mummy Returns and ID4 are represented good enough on the commercial album, however.
I have some to add: Witches of Eastwick Bootleg (Williams) - one of the BEST William's scores. I have never heard the original commercial album (so hard to find), but I found the bootleg easily and it is amazing.
The Last Days (Zimmer) - not a must have or anything, but a very good unreleased Zimmer effort.
Judge Dredd Expanded (Silvestri) - like with ID4 and TMR, the commercial album (short as it is) still has a good representation, but the expanded is worth checking out.
The Adventures of Plut Nash (Powell) - as good as Cody Banks.
Hocus Pocus Promo (Debney) - again, not overly terrific, but still pretty awesome. There is a reason this promo sells for so much...
Krull (Horner) - duh
Hawk the Slayer Promo (Roberson) - roflcakes!

Have you actually heard the final battle music from The Mummy Returns? It makes "My first bus ride" sound like someone playing chopsticks! Independence Day is debateable...well, not for me it isn't, but I can understand your point on this one. These are all great...I forgot about Witches of Eastwick! Pluto Nash is very fun, but Cody Banks is a better listen. I'd put Pluto Nash in the same category as John Debney's Jimmy Neutron promo...fun, madcap space hilarity. ;D Can't you still buy the 2-cd re-release of this one? -Brendan

Krull was an official release and out of print, but still available.
The Godzillia "promo" isn't a real promo. Its the sequenced album Arnold put together that got leaked out. It was suppose to be released officially.
The problem with the majority of the scores you've listed and being released in the future is that label's won't touch them because they've been released by other means and people can get them already.

Maybe YOU can get the authentic non-cdr promo of some of these (without paying 100 dollars on ebay), but for me and I'm sure Brendan, we sure as heck can't. Composers don't send us film scores like they do you.

I think the 2-cd Krull set goes for a lower price that it's intial retail price (outside of the BuySoundtrax.com actions). ;D So Jangles, are you saying that the 2-cd Krull set is superior to the other Krull releases? -CG NP: Final Fantasy (video game compilatuon)

The problem with the majority of the scores you've listed and being released in the future is that label's won't touch them because they've been released by other means and people can get them already. The last thing we need is a thread about why or why not things get released and the labels, etc. etc. The facts and realities of such things are known and we all know how unfair it all becomes in the end. The point here is to merely say, these scores are classics. Hoo-ah! -Brendan

Speaking of scores everyone should own, you do have a copy of the Chpt 3 or Sony's El Cid (Rozsa) cd, right? -CG

Starship Troopers complete - Agreed!
Air Force one complete - Um...what if you can't stand the original?
Under Siege 2 complete - Great themes
Small Soldiers expanded - I guess....
The Core - Ugh...2 cd's worth of this score get very very long to sit through with as weak as the main theme is. This would be better served as a 45 minute single CD release...
Gun - Who is this by? Star Trek 8,9,10 complete - I would be interested in all of these, but have none of them. I've heard the complete First Contact album is truly the one to have...
Lion King - ah yes...the ultimate in hard to obtain complete-ness....but well worth the search. ;D
Cool Runnigs - Again, the 'complete' score gets long and repetitive...another couple of tracks on the commercial song-track would have sufficed.
Good choices!

Well, unfortunately I do not have really any of the previously listed music in this thread (not sure how you guys get this stuff but I am definitely jealous). I am still pretty new to the collecting scene but have been able to get some unrealeased music.
From the stuff that I have my favorites are probably:
Equilibrium by Klaus Badelt: I really enjoy this score as it has some wonderful understated action pieces and great choral work.
Ernest Saves Christmas by Mark Snow: I wish Snow had more stuff like this released. This is a nice fun score.
Well that is all I got, hopefully I will be able to catch up with the Benjamins one of these days.

Mace Griffin: Bounty Hunter (videogame). I got this game last week for $3 at Circuit City for my X-box. The music is awesome and kinda sounds like the music from the Matrix. It bests Advent Rising! I looked on Amazon and apparently it doesn't have an official release. Damn! Richie Rich is really great too, but the Varese release is really short (under 40 minutes). It has one of Silvestri's best themes and it never gets boring. Classic comedy score. I woundn't mind hearing more of it. Anywho. I have no clue where to get bootlegs and I don't want to find out either. I've only seen them on one of those Japanese specialty CD websites. The same site was selling a CDr of Horner's Apollo 13 promo for five dollars cheaper than the legit promo. Umm.....yeah. I think I misunderstood the question. -nate
