Going back to the 1990s for some sci-fi adventure music. I'm starting off with Newman's "Galaxy Quest". Even though the film is a parody, the score plays it pretty straight. It focuses on one theme for the most part, but man it's a good one.
After that is one of my favorites from JNH, "Waterworld". Great themes, solid action music and just an entertaining score all the way around.
I'll wrap things up with David Arnold's "Independence Day". The movie hurt my brain but the score it one of my favorites from this composer.
What are you listening to?

Finally listening to Danny Elfman's Epic, which I've had sitting around the house for a while but just hadn't gotten around to. It's very charming stuff - basically what you'd expect for this sort of thing, but done quite well and benefiting from flavorful orchestration.

I'm working from home today, so I loaded up my Windows Media player with 300-400 suites and just hit "play random". It came up with some great things that I haven't listened to for years - HOUSE OF GOD by Poledouris, EXIT TO EDEN by Patrick Doyle, WINDTALKERS by Horner, THE JUROR by JNH, GOOD WILL HUNTING by Elfman...
I'd really totally forgotten how good EXIT TO EDEN is. The movie was utterly abysmal, but somehow Doyle managed to write a wonderful regal brass fanfare, some fun chase music that sounds like the baby cousin of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, and a susprisingly touching piano love theme. Great stuff.

BYZANTIUM - Javier Navarrete Really not my kind of score. It's very bleak and unsettling. The only redeeming feature for me is the occasional use of the Coventry Carol. Any score that uses that can't be all bad

Any score that uses that can't be all bad Hey that is one of my favorite carols too, perfect on a winter's day. I had some spare time today and gave Elfman's "Mars Attacks" a spin. I always forget how fun this score is. I get a kick out of it every time I listen to it. Those opening titles are a blast. But I also enjoy the "Martian Madame" and "Martian Lounge" cues.

Trevor Jones' THE SENDER. Very mono-thematic with poor sound quality on the LLL CD. Couldn't wait for it to end and will never listen to this CD again. Now, if someone could release complete EXCALIBUR (with the Wagner music) and LAST OF THE MOHICANS that would be great.
Abel Korzeniowski's W./E. Really like this and Korzeniowski is rapidly becoming a current favorite with this, COPERNICUS STAR and ESCAPE FROM TOMORROW.

Well I had some money in my iTunes account so I broke down and picked up "Yo Yo Ma Plays Ennio Morricone". I really don't have much Morricone in my collection, and after Erik's wonderful re-recordings countdown a couple years ago, well this one has been on my radar. Really looking forward to exploring it.
After that is a score I haven't listened to in a long time, Kenji Kawai's "You're Under Arrest - The Movie". I remember it having some solid action music in a 90s style. I remember a couple J-pop songs and a couple silly comedy tracks. About what you'd expect. But other than that... we'll see.
I'll wrap things up with another listen to Herrmann's "Mysterious Island". Need to pick out the tracks for my Film scores playlist.
What are you listening to?
