Just saw the film today and very much enjoyed it. As Chris said, the world the Wachowski's created here is extraordinarily... alive. By keeping the feel of a cartoon and the essence of non-realism, they've created an environment that feels able to breathe a lot more.
And who knew you could make car racing action sequences work by editing around between facial expressions; somehow it manages to make perfect sense. Keeping to the style and eccentricities of the original show didn't hurt the movie either. It's bound to frusturate those who can't stand the zaniness of certain scenes, but nothing less would have made sense in such an already over-the-top world. Having Spritle flip off Royalton was also an amusingly unexpected touch.
And Giacchino's score in the film? Pure... awesome. Well done, Michael! Especially that finale; superb musical showmanship.

Especially that finale; superb musical showmanship. -Jockolantern I particularly enjoyed the moments where one character is expressing some type of emotion to another character where they are both on the screen, yet in two entirely different scenes. Examples would be Royalton yelling a Speed while Speed appears to be on the receiving end of his rant, until it is revealed he's really already on the race track. Another one would be where Snake Oiler gives a grin of excitment at the thought of getting paid to go after Speed, who we see at the bottom of the screen racing across the desert in Casa Cristo. It almost looks as if he is trying to swallow him up. Sequences like these really help put it in the realm of "awesome" for me. David Poland has a great review of the movie that's worth reading here - www.mcnblogs.com/thehotbutton/2008/05/speed_racer_review.html

So Chris, remember when I promised I'd give this film a fair shake and actually watch it? Well, I did, and here's proof: NOW GIVE ME BACK TWO-AND-A-HALF HOURS OF MY LIFE, DAMMIT!

Soon as the last bunch of major reviews come in tomorrow we'll count up this sucker. I say we wait until there are at least over 100 reviews before declaring the final tally. There are over 100. Joe

My student rate was freakin $8.25 at a Mann Theater in Van Nuys. I remember when REGULAR tickets were $6.
I thought it was way better than I expected, well i didn't really have any expectations.
I never would have bothered to see it if my friend didn't suggest it, and I believe that I am going to buy the CD, the music was that good, I liked it much better than that complete score mp3 file, tahts for sure.

They're the exact same score, so how could you enjoy the Varese album better than you enjoyed the complete score? That statement is quite... contradictory.

How did you get a student rate, Jens? By still having a student ID card. Sure, it's dated "2001", but those yokels at the theatre never look at it closely. strange, huh? could be everyone´s ticket... You're an idiot.
