Best film of the year, maybe even the decade. Stunning. Mind-blowing.
Also, I saw Sherlock Holmes and thought it was pretty cool. What a bad-ass! I liked how the character was more of an action guy but still methodical and intriguing. Loved the score in the film.

I just saw it in 3d and was not as impressed as everyone else. Sure, it was almost 3 hours of amazing eye candy, but the stories and characters did not engross me one bit. The whole time I was sitting watching it, I kept being reminded "oh, this is a digital shot - it looks really nice!" instead of being drawn into the world. Also, once again, Sam Worthington was great. I didn't like the archetypal general character, or even Sigourney Weaver's character.
Overall, an excellent movie, but not one of my favorites of the year.

The stories, characters, and dialogue will not improve after a second viewing, but the eye candy gets more enganging if you watch it on an IMAX screen.

As for the movie: Overblown, budget-based CGI deconstructions of formal filmmaking are a fad I'm getting more and more tired of with each passing blockbuster. I realize I'm the the guy who defended the Star Wars prequels to the hilt all those years ago but, to be honest, even I don't care for those much any more (rub it in, Yavar ). I knew you'd come around. Actually, no, I didn't but I'm glad. For what it's worth to people who loved Avatar, I do think James Cameron's sense of drama in the film is MUCH better than anything Lucas exhibited in the Star Wars prequels. There's a lot to like in Avatar and it isn't horrible...it's just not very good, on the whole. I've liked every other Cameron film I've seen (Aliens, both Terminators, Titanic, and True Lies) much, much better. I didn't feel cheated of my money seeing it in theater (see: Star Wars prequels) but I didn't feel much like spending the time to see it ever again. Yavar

I like this guy's perspective. Except on Princess and the Frog. And Jon, I seriously hope that Dances With Wolves is #1 on your top 10 movies of all time list if Avatar made it on there. Yavar

I knew you'd come around. Actually, no, I didn't but I'm glad. That makes two of us. I admit to still enjoying The Phantom Menace the most out of the three prequels on a purely "fluff" level but Attack of the Clones is jarringly sophomoric and painful to watch at its worst moments. Revenge of the Sith at least feels dramatically competent yet lacks any real heart or humanity; the scattershot narrative fails to grip. Redlettersmedia's Phantom Menace analysis between the prequel lightsaber battles and the original trilogy style of dueling breaks down the humanity argument I have against the prequels quite nicely and far more effectively than I ever would have come up with on my own. It's a small argument conveying a much larger idea behind exactly where the prequels flew astray. And to think, just a decade ago we were bombarding Filmtracks with endless verbal warfare on this very topic. I do believe I said the movies would be "remembered as classics" by this point in time... I am now [thankfully] eating those words. You were right all those years ago about the prequels. (You will, however, always be wrong about Macs being greater than PCs.) ;D

I assume I'll be making lots of enemies with this, but I have to be honest:
I hated every single second of this film and I almost walked out on it.
Hated it. Pure hatred. I do not understand how a human being can withstand so much "Avatar". Why in hell was this film such a success? Why? Dear God, why?

Oh, c'mon, Jon, don't think of me like that. I don't "hate" on stuff simply because it's popular. I actually came out confused out of Avatar; I felt I missed the experience and the fun people were having and I didn't like that. Unlike new-Trek, I had no bone to pick with this one and really don't feel like ranting about it. I think my mind saw a completely different film from you guys. I'll explain later, but that doesn't imply jack about any one else's tastes.
p.s. Jon, you're not... mad at me, are you?
