I just saw this last night at Universal Studios. What a great movie! It's a throwback to the classic Disney movies I grew up with in the late 80's/early 90's, such as Beauty and The Beast, Aladdin, or the Little Mermaid. There are even the fun sidekick characters such as Louis (the gator who plays trumpet) and the lightning bug Roy. The only thing missing is an Alan Menken score, even though Randy Newman's was sufficient.

I agree with you, except that I didn't miss Alan for a fraction of a second. Randy Newman's music was fantastic throughout, with not a weak song to be found.

I quite liked it (particularly the music and the animation), but I felt like the story was trying a bit too hard to recapture the magic of previous Disney films. So many scenes felt like thinly-veiled variations on things seen in "The Little Mermaid", "Beauty and the Beast", "Aladdin", etc. Additionally, some of the bayou slapstick material grew a little weary for me after a while (particularly the encounter with the hillbillies). That being said, I thought the film was a good time at the movies.

It might have been because of the jazzy New Orleans theme of the movie, but I just felt like it was missing some of the strong magical (and more traditional) scoring that Menken can deliver. I still enjoyed Newman's score, but did miss Menken if only for a few seconds.
I do think the hillbillies scene was the worst and most out of place in the movie though - agreed there!
Where did ya'll see it by the way? Just curious as to where Georgians are seeing movies these days.
