Pretty darn good sci-fi film. ****
I hate actually writing reviews, but i'd say it's taut and well thought-out (for the most part...see below), and Sam Rockwell gave a frickin fantastic performance. Clint Mansell turns in another great score. Honestly, I have yet to hear a bad score from him. If you haven't seen it yet, don't read below. Spoilers and all that....well not really, but I wouldn't want it to take away from your enjoyment.

Now my gripe: gravity on the moon. There's too much of it. In fact, one might say it's 1.0G, which is about 8 times what it should be. I'm not saying it's a big deal, but considering this film could have easily been set on Mars, but then I guess they couldn't call it "Moon," and outdoors would have been red instead of white. For a film that otherwise tries to be very detail-oriented, cerebral, hard-sf, this seems like a potentially major oversight on the part of the screenwriters.

Yeah, I saw Moon. If ever there was a movie designed to fall squarely into the category "Types of Movies Jens is Prone to Like" it's this one. For most of its running time, it's pitch-perfect, thoughtfully dystopic science fiction. It's pleasantly reminiscent of classics like Dark Star, Silent Running and 2001 without being derivative. I say "for most of its running time" because there was one aspect to it that I found really disappointing: the ending. I am not going to spoil what happens here, other than pointing out that it doesn't fit the dark, cynical tone of the rest of the movie at all. If I could liken it to anything, Imagine One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest or 12 Monkeys ending on an optimistic note - it just wouldn't be right.

I saw it, too. I liked it. I do think it leans a little heavily on both "2001" and "Solaris", and I agree with Jens that the ending is slightly underwhelming, but otherwise I thought it was a very fine film. Rockwell's performance is one of the best I've seen this year.

This is also a "type of movie prone to like" for me. And I did like it very much. Great lead performance, atmosphere, effects and the story was highly intriguing.
I was amused that I kept thinking how excellent the "CGI" vehicles were, how it felt like I was really looking at things with real presence, weight and dimension. Then I read online much of it was done with practical model effects. That's about right.
I agree, however, the ending was a bit deflating. I don't think it necessarily had to be negative to fit, but it was just too neat and clean. You'd almost expect a Spielberg family reunion (TM) next. Some ambiguity would have gone a long way.
[SPOILER-ish]
I mean, just leaving out the expository radio transmissions and the accompanying scene at the end would be start. Nonetheless, still one of the best films I've seen this year.
