So I was at Star Trek last night and the following trailers were shown right in a row:
Transformers 2 G.I. Joe Terminator: Salvation
Had there not been a break showing the MPAA rating screen of each movie, you might have thought you were just watching one really really long trailer for one film. Don't get me wrong, I'll probably go see all of these this summer as my childhood fantasies are still alive and well (Snake Eyes vs. Storm Shadow in live-action ninja combat? Yes please.), but the summer action movie 'formula' seems to be getting more and more ubiquitous as the years go by. Massive destruction? Check. Exotic locales? Check. Some 'ancient' mystical tie-in? Check.
It actually made me wish for one giant 3-part summer movie cross-over spectacular where they would just have all these movies together as one and release one part each month. Sam Witwicky goes to college only to discover his experience with the All-Spark has left a mental echo of a time when Transformers roamed the earth freely and were worshiped as Egyptian gods. Meanwhile, Skynet sends an army of Terminator robots back in time to revive Megatron, capture Sam's knowledge of the ancient All-Spark mysteries and destroy the Eiffel Tower. Earth's only chance stands in John Connor who assembles an elite team of G.I. Joes to team up with the Autobots in a massive showdown among the Pyramids (which happen to house the base for Cobra Commander).

I like the idea, Brandon. You could call it G.I. Transforminators.

I kinda want a high-budget, old-school spoof where every staple in a summer blockbuster is exaggerated to the nth degree. Unfortunately, the only people doing spoofs are the "______ Movie" folks.

So, how was Star Trek? Would you recommend it over Wolverine.

NP: Rambo III: The Showdown/Final Battle
PS: I'm craving 80's (action) music

I absolutely recommend Star Trek (which was fantastic) over Wolverine (which was alright and worth the $5 I paid, but nothing spectacular)

If these big movies were all I had to look forward to, the Earth would come to seem like Hell itself.

Star Trek was amazing. Probably the best Trek movie ever and I hope that it spawns its entire own franchise.

Star Trek was flawless in every way but one: its utterly retarded time travel plot and villain. Everything else... the acting, dialogue, special effects, music were all absolutely top-notch.

Am I mistaken, or did you have another post somewhere on the board far less positive than this one a few days ago? Is this in the wake of a second viewing?

Well... my rage has dissipated a bit since seeing it. I didn't want to get in an argument with anyone, and I'd have to go into major spoiler territory to even discuss why I hated the film.

So far I've heard more complaints about the constant lens flares than about anything else. You're one of the few folks out there I've seen who actually didn't like the time travel stuff.

There are tons of things in the movie that really really bother me. They keep it from being a great film. Fortunately they are far outweighed by everything that is absolutely FANTASTIC about the film. The film is worth seeing if only for Karl Urban's fantastic performance...it's like DeForest Kelly's ghost is inhabiting his body. He's amazing.
