It may come as no surprise that this film was butchered to death. Which is a shame because with a premise like this one, I was really looking forward to it. I was wrong though. You'll hear in the press that Logan fights in the Civil, first and second world wars, and Vietnam. Sounds freakin' amazing, doesn't it? Plenty of time to establish a character. Guess what: that entire plot spans the opening credits, the highlight of the film, two minutes.
This film feels rushed, like it passed through multiple screenwriters who had no idea what they were doing, and handled with very mediocre direction. In the Singer films, each mutants' powers are treated with awe and respect and whole sequences were choreographed to get the most out of the scene and wow both fans the regular public. In this film, powers just happen, intermingled with explosions, abrupt cuts, and snarl. Oh, there's plenty of snarl in this one. Don't expect anything the likes of the brilliant X2 opener in the White House.
The film feels more like a fugitive story than a backstory and that's what most pisses me off (other than the unbelievably messy storytelling and editing). Wolverine's all about keeping his rage under control and cooling his temper, performing a balancing act between good and evil as he questions his motives and emotions and place in the world. Instead of retrospection and choice, we get a poorly acted Stryker who envisions the ultimate weapon as a mute savant who just so happens to be Deadpool. They even managed to ruin Deadpool. C'mon! With his mouth shut close, how's he supposed to acknowledge he's in a movie. "Hey Victor Creed, you look nothing like in the first film. *wink wink* ". That's not to say the film is laughably bad, or bad altogether, it's mediocre is what it is. There's no love.
All in all, there was plenty of promise here and I really wanted to like this film, but I feel disappointed and sad. Marvel, please get your characters back.
I would still do Hugh Jackman, though. Definitely.
Here's he on Howard Stern (I can't believe how affable, open, and honest he is): www.youtube.com/watch?v=P-7qrVLkmdw
Stern is a huge fanboy, from the looks of it.
P.S. I'm still amazed by the tech that makes Patrick Stewart's skin soft as a baby's bottom.
