Has anyone been following this? Tan Dun wrote a new piece called "Internet Symphony: Eroica" and now it is up on YouTube with a program inviting musicians from around the world to download their part, then perform it while watching a video of the conductor cuing their specific instrument part. Then they submit it as an audition - a select few will be chosen to form the "YouTube Symphony Orchestra" and perform at Carnegie Hall. You can find the details at the YouTube Symphony Page. If you want to hear Tan Dun's piece (I think it's nice, but nothing extremely special), you can see the London Symphony perform it here:

Hmmm....I just read an article back in August saying Dun wrote that piece for the Olympics, but now he wrote it for Youtube. Odd. I guess I'm a little confused by this whole thing. So to audition you are supposed to play this Tan Dun piece with your instrument of choice and if they like you you are added to the Youtube Symphony which are then just going to play random stuff at some concert? Are you going to audition Brendan?
Also, Dun makes me nervous with his conducting. Watch at 3:35 and then at 3:57 and 4:02. I'm glad he's enjoying his own music so much, but damn.

Dear Lord, I don't know the last time I have laughed that hard. I've spent the past 5 minutes replaying from 3:55-4:10 while I was laughing so hard that I am still crying. My fiance was laughing and crying from me laughing and crying, it was awesome.
Tan Dun is my new favorite person.
Plus the song was pretty good. But that was the funniest thing I have seen in....I don't even know how long.

Not even my "conducting" is as...unique...as Dun's. I still think he shouldn't have won the Oscar for Tiger & Dragon.

I actually entered this for the fun of it. If you happen to be around when voting starts (on the 14th) you could all help me out. ;D

Not even my "conducting" is as...unique...as Dun's. Well, orchestras don't really need help counting...so conductors (especially composers who are conducting their own stuff and not 'regular' conductors) often just revert to picking out the overall emotion and...er....'expressing' it. ;D And Kuhni, I can't read any of your posts seriously with that lime green text. It makes me instantly think you're trying to talk like The Hulk... KUHNI SMASH! -Brendan

Superb! Congratulations, Armin. But what's that at 1:23? Giving the horn some love? Doing smack on it? Oh... later on I see it's the cleaning. Oh, ok. I don't particularly like the piece, but Tan Dun's flair for conducting is just super cool. I'll never hear another score from him in the same way again.

Armin, congratulations.
Now take something from Mrs. Portman (Cider house rules?) and play it for a while, just to remember what "serious" music is.
Just kiddin´ ;D

Thanks, guys. It's pretty cool being in the selected few (and going to New York for free ;D). I'll take you up on that blog thing, Brendan, that's probably the easiest way to keep you all updated without writing everything a couple of times.
And yes, the horn has a tendency to save the condensed water of the airsteram in all those windings, so it takes a bit to clean it all out;)
No Portman. I might as well just pick up bagpipe playing...

Congratulations Armin. When is the concert? I hope it's not sold out. I might have to make my Carnegie Hall debut (as an audience memeber).
