Just wondering if anyone else has heard this work: I bought it on a whim some time ago and it's a pretty exciting piece. I quite like it.
The Prologue begins very quietly, but builds into a massive, thudding, splendid cacophony. Act I Pt. II, 'Transylvania,' has some wonderfully horrific Slavic-flavoured bits, and Act II Pt. I 'Winter Garden of the Grand Hotel' is a wonderful, drawn out waltz piece, something to which I am always partial.
The work is pretty thunderous and engaging, all in all. One of the better classical albums I picked up this year (although I don't buy many).
Thoughts?

It's not a terribly recent composition, from what I understand. I had just finished reading 'The Annoted Dracula' and had spent a lot of time listening to both Wojciech Kilar's and Philip Glass' "Dracula" scores, and suddenly found this strange ballet version in a used bookstore. I think it's definitely worth looking into.

I looked it up on Amazon UK and saw he also has a Ballet score of 'The Hunchback of Notredam'. I have to admit I've never heard of this composer before.

Neither had I. It's truly a stirring album, though. Now I'm intrigued by that 'Hunchback' ballet...

Had the Naxos CD for awhile and have always enjoyed it. Naxos is such a good value that I have over a 1000 of them now.

I have it. It's pretty good, nothing amazing IMO.
