The first official weekend of the real football has begun, the NFL. I was surprised that the Chargers, and Colts lost. Aaron Rogers looked ok as the new GB quarterback. I wonder why Oakland and Detroit even bother to have teams anymore. Thomas

Read football. Ha ha. Though I much prefer college football to the NFL.

Can't believe Tom Brady got hurt in the first game and is now out the rest of the reason.
Other than that I can only comment on the Vikings v. Packers game. The Vikings looked horrible in special teams (like always), rushing the QB (like always), and Tarvaris looks like he thinks he's playing Madden '09 instead of being in a real football game. The Vikings special teams can't tackle anyone, like in the last 3-4 years, and almost every kick return gets to the 30-yard line it seems. We have the best D-line in the league on paper with Jared Allen, Pat Williams, Kevin Williams, but we can't pressure or sack the QB. Tarvaris Jackson just stands there with the ball and never throws it until the defense has time to cover everyone (or sack him) then he tries to throw it into traffic or run. You never see him quickly release the ball. The Vikings "offense" is painful to watch (except when Adrian Peterson busts off a 38-yard run or something). I guess I was spoiled by watching Randy Moss all those years. Our WRs still aren't very good and that is a problem when Adrian Peterson gets into the defensive secondary when the WRs can't block. Peterson would've had around a 70-yard TD if one of our receivers would've blocked properly down field during the Packers game. The Vikings secondary has been giving WRs about a 10-yard cushion the last few years which gives the offense instant open receivers and no time for the D-line to rush the QB. That is getting annoying. It's like we are constantly stuck in the "Prevent" Defense.
The Packers looked equally horrible and their punt return TD won the game for them. Aaron Rodgers didn't look all the great, but at least he didn't throw an interception.

That USC game was insane. They'll be tough to beat. I was at the ASU game and saw them choke at the end. SO glad football's back!

There were some good match-ups in week 2. After 2 weeks, it appears that the NFC East is stacked, a la the early 1990's, when the Giants, Cowboy's, and Redskins won like 4+ consecutive Superbowls. The Monday night Cowboys-Eagles game should be fun as usual. In the AFC, I'm surprised at how bad the Colts have looked. If the Vikings could score an offensive touchdown, they would have won easily. You know the offense is bad when the announcer starts talking about setting the FG record. ;D

Hmm! The Patriots are 2-0 again. The Giants are 2-0 again. San Diego has lost their first two games by one point and LT is hurting. Not good I think the NFL is far from a yawn. Thomas

And as far as Nevada is concerned the Rebels pulled a cool upset but the other school gives up 69 points? How do you do that? Thomas

Hmm! The Patriots are 2-0 again. The Giants are 2-0 again. As are the Packers and Broncos. Green Bay is looking surprisingly steady under Aaron Rogers and the Broncos, minus the best field goal kicker in the league, are also looking shockingly solid. They gave up an immense lead against San Diego yesterday yet still managed to tough it out and pull off some fantastic finishing plays to put the game away in their favor. It is certainly shaping up to be a very interesting and thrilling season. -Jockolantern

I can't stand watching the Vikings waste one of the best defenses we've ever had by sticking with a terrible QB: Tarvaris Jackson. We've had the best run defense for 2-3 years now, a decent offensive line, the best RB in the NFL, decent kickers, etc. but the talent is just wasting away when we have an offense that can't score because we have zero passing game. Tarvaris will just sail the ball over a receivers head missing them by 10+ yards, throws the ball into the turf in front of a wide open WR, holds the ball too long, etc. And Carlton: why did you guys send us Visanthe Shiancoe? What did we ever do to the NY Giants to deserve that? He drops balls all the time and he's a frickin' TE! He dropped a TD pass yesterday that probably would've won the game for us. To make it worse Tarvaris Jackson actually made a pefect throw on that play! They gave up an immense lead against San Diego yesterday yet still managed to tough it out and pull off some fantastic finishing plays to put the game away in their favor. You mean by cheating? The Chargers should be bitching to everyone possible over that loss. The refs gave the game to the Broncos by not allowing the Chargers to keep their fumble recovery that would've sealed the game because the ref blew the whistle. Even though it was a fumble and a clean recovery by San Diego. They even do a booth review and still don't allow the fumble recovery. INSANE! Anyway. The refs are having a slow start with the two Vikings games and that Broncos v. Chargers game. Horrible calls. I don't know if anyone caught the Vikings v. Packers game last week, but they called penalties for EVERYTHING. It was on pace to break the NFL record. And yesterday the refs gave the Colts a phantom touchdown that won the game for them. The Vikings made a goal line stand and stopped the Colts from scoring, but one of the refs claimed the ball "broke the plane" even though the replays showed it wasn't the case. The Colts RB never exteneded the ball and he was tackled with his arms and the ball behind the goal line, but it was somehow ruled a TD. To make matters worse the the refs gave the Colts a phantom TD on this same drive that was overturned by a booth review and that play wasn't even close. The WR was down almost two yards from the goal line and they called it a TD at first. Oh, and of course New England just plugs in another QB to replace Brady and they still win. Meh.

I actually remember that name... probably from some old preseason games. ;D The Gaints TE's haven't caught 1 pass this year, so the Vikes probably just got for blocking purposes... It was the Jets. Belichek always seems to bring his A-game (spies and everything) against his former team.

Back to college, Saturday was a SWEET day to be a BYU fan. Not only did they silence all the talk about not deserving a win against Washington the week before, but they KILLED UCLA! That was a great game. It was a great day for the Mtn. West conference in general. Right now they look better than the Pac-10. Recent commentary about it being USC and the nine dwarves is well put. The Mtn. West now has 2 teams in the top 25, with another knocking, and went 4-0 against Pac-10 teams Saturday. Cal losing was another hit. Washington's loss was not so unexpected. Those of us who cheer for non-BCS schools are always happy to see our conference looking good against a BCS conference. All of this could affect USC in the polls by the end of the year. The teams they have to play in conference have now had some big upsetting losses to non-BCS teams, and that could really affect their strength of schedule. We'll see, I guess.

I'm just about ready to say better luck next year San Diego. Can't believe that they're 2-3. Thomas

Apparently, Reggie Bush running back punts for touchdowns is the elixir of life for opposing teams.
