I hate the Nutcracker suite (except Waltz of the Flowers) but I LOVE the complete Nutcracker ballet. It's got some killer action music and some other setpieces that Tchaikovsky strangely left out of his suite, which focuses on little gimmicky dance numbers.
That said, the complete Nutcracker still can't hold a candle to Swan Lake or especially Sleeping Beauty.

What i Don't like about the TSO cd's is all those origianl songs with vocals. I just want a CD of their instrumental rock arrangements of the classics.

hate is a pretty strong word. I took the time to look it up in the dictionary and it says "to dislike intensely or passionately; feel extreme aversion for or extreme hostility toward; detest. I try never to hate anything.

I think that Coffee(Arabian Dance) which is part of the suite is not gimmicky at all. It is one of my favorite listening parts of the entire Nutcracker. If anything at all its ideas came from Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade an outstanding orchestral work. Or does that too fall into the category of hate/gimmicky? Tom

Okay, hate is a strong word. I dislike the Nutcracker suite. I'm annoyed that it only has one (or two...yes, the Arabian dance is nice) actual highlights of the complete score. If it was a film score and it had those portions picked out for album release, you can bet I'd be pissed about all the great stuff left off. Same here, because when people go to a concert and hear the Nutcracker suite, they don't even have any idea of all the great music they're missing. Aside from the action music, there's also the beautiful Waltz of the Snowflakes, a gorgeous choral highlight. No...HATE I reserve for Ravel's Bolero. Yavar

What about Harold Faltermeyer? Is that reserved for hate?

What about Harold Faltermeyer? Is that reserved for hate? Harold Faltermeyer's music is so bad that one can't help but transcend hate and move right into the realm of bewildered confusion. Listening to "Tango and Cash" is the musical equivalent of getting sucked into a black hole (with apologies to John Barry's score for "The Black Hole". Back at ya later

From what I understand and please correct me if I am wrong but isn't it true that Bolero was written as an exercise for his students. This is one too that I am not too fond of either.
I agree with what you say about the Nutcracker as opposed to the Suite. People are missing quite a lot of the material. As far as a concert piece is concerned it would be the entire program if it was played complete as it is somewhere around 90 minutes in length. Perhaps then it is meant to be performed as the ballet. The recording I recently got on Telarc is 73 minutes of the 90, my guess is to have it all on one CD. When I finish with my article I'll be sure to let all of you know my opinion. I'm leaning toward the Previn/Royal Philharmonic as being the best recording that I have.

Doing my research for the Nutcracker I came upon a UK hit from the 60's called "Nut Rocker" performed by B. Bumble and the Stingers. It is based on the theme from the scene Children's Galop and Arrival of Guests. It certainly rocks! Tom

I should mention that I picked up JINGLE ALL THE WAY by David Newman this year and I'm loving it as much as I loved it in the film 12 years ago.
