for the same reasons they hate John Williams. He appeals to a much wider audience than what most modern composers can attract. He writes sweeping, thematic romantic stuff...the kind of stuff that made music blossom in the 1800s. Now, a lot of the stuff we get is so cold and calculated and explicit in it's depressing portrayal of life or whatever...no wonder people don't like modern music as much.
Beethoven was a downer of a fellow, but he sure knew how to remedy that in his uplifting music. And even in his slow, elegiac music, there's emotion, upheaval that doesn't rely on shocking the hell out of it's audience and inflicting pain on it's ears.
(don't get me wrong on this, there is quite a bit of modern music I like)
