Being a music student, I'm being subjected to much "proper" concert music, blah blah blah. Anyway. Ohio State drama academy/whatever staged a production of The Coronation of Poppaea (Monteverdi? Too lazy to check) which I unfortunately didn't go to. Blah.
Also, my piano repitoire includes 4 inventions by Bach, two of which I'll be playing for my jury at the end of the quarter. Wish me luck!

Being subjected to "proper" concert music... ah, the good old times. I think I wouldn't have gone to that production either. I'm not for madrigals or operas.
Which ones did you chose? 2, 3, or 4 part inventions? Good luck! ;D

Excellent choices. What level/school is it you are having the exams for? If you don't mind me asking. Do you want to become a pro pianist?

I'm a theory major, and truthfully, I don't find the piano all that stimulating at the moment (don't tell my teacher). It's more of a means to an end. The class I REALLY enjoy is aural training! But anyway. I'm in piano 201 and I'm trying to jury for 401. I'm actually pretty slow learning pieces, but I have 2 quarters of pieces now, and my teacher's really cracking the whip.

Cool. What are possible working places once you finish school?

Heck, I have no idea. My GOAL would be to start working for a film composer and slowly work my way up the ranks, like the great Chris Tilton is in the process of doing....
But I have a few years left before I need to start worrying.
However, I'd be interested in doing whatever's fun.

Good luck to Joe. I almost studied music in school, but my brief run-in with theory courses convinced me not to continue: Carlton, that's precisely the album I was talking about. I can vouch for performance quality--it is an excellent album, and doesn't sound old or anything. The recording of the Canon is fantastic, too. Some of the other stuff on the disc was reworked, too. It's all just wonderful. --Chris

Theory is easy for me. Aural was harder, because I started that without the theory background. I'm in Aural IV and Theory II. I'm on autopilot in theory. Of course, it's also at 7:30 in the morning.... The only thing that could make me drop out at this point is my piano teacher, who, although she looks like the same person as last quarter, must be her evil twin sister. I'm practicing twice as much as last quarter, and she still yells at me damn near every lesson! Either she's an alien, or it's possible to have PMS when you're over 60, and on a weekly basis, at that.... Blah!

Complementary piano teachers are troubled people. They didn't make it to the top but still consider them great teachers. Per default that leads to problems, also because they think they're teaching the most important class in the whole school. So beware of doing anything giving them a diferent feeling!

Good advice. I'M certainly not going to tell her I'm just in piano because I had to pick a principal instrument!
....I'm not allowed to yawn in her class...
