Nevermind, I can listen to them for free on "Classical Music Library" through my school. Cool!

They are all great works. We're doing no.8 in May, so that should be fun.

Bruckner has good moments with looong boring stretches in between. Also, he always seems to do almost exactly the same thing. Bernard Herrmann he ain't.

I have to agree with Yavar at this point of my life. Perhaps my opinion will change down the road.

My favorite is the Finale of Bruckner's 8th symphony (particularly all the loud brassy parts)! Sadly, the final 3 notes are really cheesy, though, IMO. Bruckner's 7th is also quite good. The thing about Bruckner is that his symphonies are really LONG (a single movement can last over 25 minutes), so sometimes it's hard to make time to listen.

Mahler's symphonies are even longer but they remain consistently interesting and fresh.
The best Bruckner symphony IMO is his 6th.

I just heard a recording of the 9th recently. I had forgotten just how awesome that symphony is.

While I have the set on LP's and CD's I seldom re-visit them other than the 4th.

I just heard a recording of the 9th recently. I had forgotten just how awesome that symphony is. Well, the pounding scherzo is pretty damn cool but it gets old after a while. Too repetitive. Yavar

That intensity is a real draw there for me. While it may get repetitive, the effect is undeniable.

We did Mahler 1st @ university. I thought it was kind of cheesy myself, but definitely some great brass moments.

That's his cheesiest symphony, I guess. I'm not crazy about all the influences, from the French children's song in the slow movement to the Handel in the finale. His others are much better IMO (except for the 8th which I've never warmed up to). Nothing cheesy in the 6th symphony.
