Just for the heck of it, here are my favorite symphonies from various big names: Hey, the big names are big, really big, what about the smaller names? In don't know if this is a big or samll name but I've always liked Hovhaness, Symphony No. 2. -CG

A lighter Beethoven. Never heard that one. I guess his string writing is nice, but he did the worst horn parts ever. Hence you not liking him. In other words you like all his music except for his horn writing? I understand. But I don't think a trombonist should dislike a certain composer because he/she doesn't feature the trombone well, or a bassoonist should dislike a composer because he/she doesn't do well composing for bassoon. I can understand if they don't, but I wish they wouldn't let that get in the way of enjoying the composer's strengths. But heck I'm really not a musician so I look at it more from the composer's point of view. Yavar

If that's the case, I should be the most miffed at every composer for never including pianos in their symphonies. Save for those few and rarely heard 20th century works. Appalachian Spring may not be a symphony, but it makes lovely use of the piano in the larger ensemble. Sayonara! Jockolantern

There is a difference between not featuring an instrument and having it but writing absolutely crap parts for it. He didn't really know how to use the horn, so it should actually be quite funny from the composer's point of view.
