Has anyone watched them on Kongisking.net or the DVDs?
I got the two-disc DVD set for Christmas and it is really good (even though I haven't seen the movie, yet). It is mainly fly-on-the-wall type camera work and atmosphere, except there are interviews. But, the interviews take place where the crew members are actually working instead of doing a formal interview just for the DVD making it a lot more spontaneous and interesting to watch. I thought I would mention some of the best ones that everyone should check out on the website or DVDs:
1) The April 1st, 2005 Diary is the best. Peter Jackson announces that there will be two sequels based on one screen play called "The Son of Kong." Jackson says all the cast is coming back and they were saving some of the set pieces for the new movies, etc., etc. They even have a Universal executive say since they had so much money set aside for the scrapped Chronicles of Riddick sequel, they could use it for King Kong sequels.
The plot of the movie is Kong's son (an albino gorilla ;D ) goes to Germany during WWII to fight the Nazis. It shows Peter Jackson studying production drawings of the albino gorilla with machine guns strapped to his shoulders and it shows PJ looking over the scripts of the Kong sequels while still filming the first one. WETA, the actors, and everyone gets involved with this prank. It is extremely funny and a must see. I believed it at first, but what got me to start doubting was the release dates of the two sequels: one was to come out June 2005, the other December 2005.
2) The Diary that follows Jackson around for a full day is funny as well, especially during an editing session when the editors are asking him questions and the camera pans on him sleeping on the couch. There is also another diary towards the end of shooting that shows Jackson sleeping on the set after calling in Bryan Singer to help him direct (which I'm guessing was a prank as well).
3) Showing the crew building the U.S. Navy planes, used in the Empire State Building scenes, from the original real life blueprints from the Smithsonian because none of the planes survived into the 21st century.
I would recommend anyone to view these production diaries (I know this is probably old news to many people). I would recommend the DVDs, but you have to pay $15 for the elaborate packaging. The two-disc set runs about 3 hours so the $30 price tag seems steep to me. Yeah you get four copy paper sized paintings from the movie and certificate of authenticity, but it still seems too expensive. Still I can't wait to see what kind of DVD is produced for the Kong movie. From the quality of these production diaries I'm guessing the Kong DVD will be even better than the Lord of the Rings Special Editions.
