So, Ami and I just finished watching Jonathan Glazer's Birth on DVD.
My GOD, what a monumentally boring movie. I understand what Glazer was trying to say - ruminations about life and loss and grief and the need to retain a part of something you loved and no longer have - but it was so slow as to completely negate any emotional impact it might have otherwise had. The director was obviously in love with Nicole Kidman's face judging by the amount of times he just let his camera sit there, ever-so-slowly zooming in on her left nostril while she gazed off into middle distance. Cameron Bright, the kid, was quite impressive for a 10-year old, but that whole furore about the bathtub scene was a storm in a teacup.
I'd maybe give it *1/2, purely for the nice cinematograpy and the underlying intellectual intentions.
Superb score by Alexandre Desplat though.

I have to say I found the score average, not very compelling. And somehow I got the feeling - just from listening to the CD - that the movie would suck. It's interesting to see how sometimes it actually turns out true. Then again, sometimes it's completely off. No need to think about this movie any longer...

Yeah, I don't like it as much either. Ultimately a bit boring itself, plus those droning synths on the 2nd half of the album are completely distracting and usually ruin my enjoyment of the score.

The beginning was actually very cool. I like the horn fanfares and other stuff that's going on. From track 5 on though it's pretty dead.

Does Birth have the single stupidest third act plot twist of all time or what? While I was watching it, I could feel my mind fall away like wet cake.

It the bad version of the Alias and 24 and Lost Twists. By the way...Lost. The invisible dinosaur is in fact a flying black cloud that makes noises like a crane? What the hell?

I've warned you several times. Actually I recall you saying something along the lines of "I can't tell you what the stupid ending is, but you absolutely must see it for yourself to believe it!" And you were right. *Shudder*
