Since Zathura got around a 75% on Rotten Tomatoes, I expected something good. However, it pretty much sucked. It conveyed no sense of wonder, danger, or adventure to me. All the two kids did is fight (which makes for very boring characters), only to be stopped short by an impressive special effect....or a robot. Don't forget such great lines as "Dude, you are eating my food!" or "What a dickhead". Two stupid kids and two dumb teenagers... And the end was completely a hack-job. Here they are in the greatest peril, and all of a sudden he gets a "good roll", and now we come to the end! What better way to get out of danger than get a good card? How exciting is that?
I must say the Debney score was good though. It starts and ends with a little triumphant fanfare (reminding me of Galaxy Quest), and the rest seemed to be interesting, though I don't know how it would be listening to it on album not in context of the movie. If I remember correctly, the score in the movie was more that of suspense than bombastic action cues, but meh. I sometimes forget.

The trailer made it seem like Debney would have a great canvas to work with... kind of like a "Cutthroat Island in space" with the usual family love themes and evil dark ominious music. Speaking of Debney has anyone heard his "Dreamer" score with Joshua Bell?

Dreamer is unbearably slow, utterly predictable pseudo-Copeland Americana -- a real snorer.
Zathura is a bit less melodic than I would have liked, the action music basically being nothing but crash-bang noise (fun, well-orchestrated crash bang noise, but still), but the opening fanfare rocked my face off. Worth the price of the album alone, IMHO.

Sounds like Galaxy Quest plus Lost in Space plus The Relic plus Scorpion KIng plus Cats and Dogs plus I know what you did last summer...One hell of a mix.

I got ZATHURA yesterday.
When the music goes soft, it’s dreamy, with magical choir and woodwinds, bells/rings and with an awe-inspiring sound, drastically representing the vastness of space and makes you think of (duh!) planets and galaxies so far away! Rest is huge, dense and sparkling brassy music (note that the brass section has a primitive, particularly deep, low and loud sound, gorgeous stuff) with lots of heavy strings, abrupt cuts and bangs along with percussion a la CUTTHROAT ISLAND. Themes are massive and rousing and so is the general feeling you get of this score.
