Last year as part of my IFMCA duties I explored a concept soundtrack release "Pantheon" by Australian composer Zaalen Tallis. It was thematically rich and just an outstanding release, which really showcased Tallis' talents as a composer. I felt impressed enough to nominate it for a special award for two reasons; 1. That it was an exceptional work which merited the award. 2. That granting him an award might encourage more up and coming composers to also try concept albums as a means to introduce themselves to the film score community as well as to potential employers. Regretfully my colleagues at the IFMCA did not share my passion for "Pantheon". Well, "The Desert Myth" is Tallis' second effort, which is also very thematically rich and abounds in a wondrous array of ethnic instruments, textures and rhythms. I felt transported through time and space to the windswept dunes of the MIddle East deserts of old. In cues such as the dance-like "Playing in the Courtyard" there is a Goldsmithesque flavor that is most enjoyable. Standout cues are 1 Persian Myth, 2 The Adventure Begins, 3 Shot Down!. 5 City Of Enlightenment, 10 Playing In The Courtyard, 12 No More Camels!, 14 Storming The City, 15 Old vs New and the finale Teleporting. The score is available from iTunes. I say, yes to concept albums and hope more as yet unknown composers give it a try! Here is the site link to read about this score. www.scorenotes.com/desert-myth.htmlAll the best!
