Great review, Jon. I had a blast with the film - which is as spectacularly over-the-top as the best of Emmerich's work - but I, too, remain disappointed by how muted and generic the music for his movies has been in the post-Arnold era. The bombastic third act of the film in particular is just begging for huge ID4-style themes.

Another book-end score, but the opening cue is a guilty pleasure! The KW team always seems to get the job done, but in journeyman fashion - I never get the "WOW". But I am patient, perhaps next time. All the best.

I enjoyed Harald Kloser's score to the first AvP movie. It had a nice theme and some good action cues, however, after that I completely agree that the Kloser/Wanker scores have been functional but forgettable. Bland is in fact the best descriptor. It's too bad, cause I used to look forward to Emmerich films just for their scores.

I certainly hope that Emmerich and Arnold can reconcile for the ID4 sequels. I actually thought Kloser's Day After Tomorrow score wasn't bad, but even that is pretty blandly functional aside from a couple nice performances of the main theme. ID4 movies without Arnold's themes and music just seem like a complete waste of time.

Agree with all the above sentiment. I don't really understand it - it's like Emmerich had a 180-degree turn in his attitude towards music after The Patriot.

Some insight James, when he booted Arnold off the film in favor of Williams, I think it left bad feelings. Arnold was very displeased at his treatment. What a shame.

If Roland Emmerich claims that he can envision ID4 sequels without Will Smith, I imagine he can probably envision ID4 sequels without David Arnold, too. Sad, but I'd be quite surprised if Emmerich dropped Kloser and Wanker at this point. Something like The Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader is probably as close as we're going to get to another Arnold/Emmerich score...

It is - but even if not David Arnold (or indeed John Williams), I'm surprised he didn't stick with the "big music" formula.
