Just listened to his Lyra Angelica (Harp Concerto)
It is awesome. I have it on a NAXOS disc with his 2nd and 5th symphonies.
Any opinions?

I've been interested in this disc. I love Alwyn's scores to the Disney Swiss Family Robinson and The Crimson Pirate.

Do you have Chandos' "Film Music of William Alwyn" sets?

Nope. I would if I were rich of course.

Do you have Chandos' "Film Music of William Alwyn" sets? Yes they are excellent. I like volumes two and three the best personally. Volume one has three long suites and a short track all arranged by Christopher Palmer, while the latter two has reconstructions and such by Philip lane. The first volume has Richard Hickox and the London Symphony Orch and the latter two are Rumon Gamba and the BBC Philharmonic. I won't be selling any of the three any time soon, however.

Tom, thanks for linking to your review. I'll add that one to my "to get" list. I have nothing by Alwyn.

I listened to the first cue and it's pretty good. Btw, did you like the harps in the Celtic Symphony? If the rest of Rautavaara's peice is good, I'll send it your way (if you want me to). I just want to listen to the rest of it while I'm not preoccupied with reading posts, typing, thinking about ordering cd's, and so fourth. The cd has gotten mixed reviews at Amazon. www.amazon.com/Rautavaara-Symphony-Journey-Harp-Concerto/dp/B00005Q7H0-Carlton PS: Today was a nice foggy day to listen to music, but I had to work...

Yeah, I liked the harps. Truth be told, I'm pretty nuts about harps in anything.

Did you know that later in his life Miklos Rozsa wrote a Sonata for harp? Have you heard it yet?

No, but I have heard his very late Sonata for Solo Violin, Op. 40 (his final piece was for Ondes Martenot, an Op. 45 in 1989...this one was still done four or five years after he retired from film scoring).

My introduction to Lyra Angelica was through Michelle Kwan's long program in the 1997-98 season. Her LP at Nationals was the first to receive perfect 6.0's for performance.
You can see it at You Tube (not sure if we can post links), but it's a lovely visual to beautiful music.

Since it's ok, here's the link (this version has no commentary) www.youtube.com/watch?v=aUBpz2uFO1UAnd the same program performed at the Olympics with commentary www.youtube.com/watch?v=aUBpz2uFO1UThe program combines Lyra Angelica and Satie's Gymnopedie #3. This program was my first introduction to Alwyn, and since then I bought a couple CD's of his film music.
