Hi I've recently become a big fan of this composer's music...I have his famous Pictures at an Exhibition, (both his piano and the Ravel orchestrated versions) which is fantastic, (so cool to hear what would be the film music influence!) and his Boris Godunov Opera and Night on Bald Mountain. This composer doesn't to have seem to be all that prolific, but can anyone recommend other works?
Thanks

If you can track a recording down, it's interesting to hear Gortchakov's orchestration of Pictures at an Exhibition - it's a little less grandiose than Ravel's, but it feels tighter in some ways. -Brendan

N8, my m8! Well, you could come over here and listen to the concerts of the Russian choir I sung in until recently...there's quite some Mussorgsky to be found. P@aE is a masterful work, and the final movement, "The Bogatyr Gate" essentially provides the explanation why I so love whole notes and triplets. And nothing tops the Ravel version! Ta & ta ta, CK

There's also a version of Pictures at an Exhibition orchestrated by Vladimir Ashkenazy, which I also like better than Ravel's version (it's paired with Ashkenazy performing the original on piano).
I like a few Ravel pieces (Daphnis and Chloe, for example) but overall I'm not a big fan of his showy orchestration. Give me Sibelius any day.

Modest, at least to my knowledge, had no symphonies or violin and piano concerto pieces. You seem to have his most popular works

Two of his operas, Boris Godunov and The Marriage come highly recommended. Shame he didn't write more orchestral music.

Stay away from anything Ravel got his slimy paws on.
BTW, have you heard the Emerson, Lake and Palmer version of Pictures?

I would be interested in hearing the symphony.
