I met John Williams today. Now, I didn't get the chance to talk to him, or have him sign my fingers, along with 20 of my favorite cd inserts, but I did have the chance to stand 5 feet away from where he was standing. Is this much reverence for a man healthy? I thought he might have been glowing, or maybe that was just me. ;D
Wow, the open rehearsal with John Williams and the New York Philarmonic Orchestra... All, I can write is Wow. I mean WOOOOOOOW!
It seems like this is better than going to the actual concert. I hope he comes back there next year! Something like this would make a great "gathering" event. So, how could a rehearsal be better than a concert? First of all, the rehearsal only costs 20 bucks, and if one arrives early, he/she can choose where they want to sit (expect for the first few rows which were sanctioned off). I was suprised that a lot of people came to the rehearsal. The general orchestra section, along with the first two balcony tiers, was filled up.
Secondly, there's the interactions between Williams and the orchestra. Now I couldn't hear everything he said, his back was facing the auidence, but just hearing him commenting on how the music should be played ("the brass is going too fast"), how the music sounded ("this was fantanstic"), and so forth, it was brillant. I mean, Wow. WOOOOOW! JW seemed very relaxed and in control. The orchestra even laughed after he replied to a question, posed by a member, of the brass section, about a particular E note. William's flipped through his blue book, pondered the material, and said, "It may not be good, but it's right" ;D Before JW left the stage, he did say he was scoring Indy IV.
Afterwards, I tried to sneak in a few pictures. Pictures were a no-no, but I did run into someone from Austria who "saved" the first half of the rehearsal, before a usher starting eyeing him. This guy is going to all three concert performances. Afterwards, in the green room, I hung out with him and some other JW fanatics. This was great. One lady from the JWfan.com Board was there. There was another, from Vancover, whose dad is a conductor for an orchestra in Hong Kong. Unfortunately, JW left via a different exit, so none of us fanatics got to see him, or amaze him with our knowledge and fandom. ;D
Ah, the baton.
