I explored Elysium yesterday. Well, to all my RC/MV friends this will be a scoregasm. We have enough sonic Horn Of Doom Blasts to blow out your neighbor's windows, enough drum loops to put Zimmer's Man Of Steel 9 to shame, enough cello ostinatos churning to saw down a forest, and the requisite wailing woman! ;D Kidding aside, the score has some ballsy moments; 02 Fire Up The Shuttle, 10 Zero Injuries Sustained , 12 You Have No Idea, 18 Heading To Elysium, 20 When He Wakes Up, Kruger Suits Up and 20 Fire And Water. The quieter efforts like 01 Heaven and Earth, 27 Breaking A Promise and 28 Elysium while pleasant just did not inspire. The finale 29 New Heaven, New Earth struggled to be great but was still-born. No doubt some of you who worship at the altar of MV/RC will find this 'Epic', for me perhaps a guilty pleasure if I can stitch all the action cues together. All the best!

I'm seeing the movie in about 2 weeks time I hope. I am looking forward to it; including to its score. I don't usually mind ostinato and drums, provided it's well done, well mixed, etc.

I started listening to this. I'm afraid I soon stopped. Craig, you're a more patient man than I.

I've given this another go, a proper listen this time, and am glad I did. It develops in surprising directions after the less-than-promising start. The album feels too long, but there's some decent stuff here.

My first listen was a disappoint, same one chord, one note dominating, as isocrates. I will re-listen and hope i capture something i missed in the first time.

one note dominating, as isocrates. I'm not sure I know what this means. But, anyway, I thought ELYSIUM was great - my review debuts tonight.

It's one basic bassline throughout the whole score, the same note starts all the pieces in the same scale.

It's one basic bassline throughout the whole score, the same note starts all the pieces in the same scale. My compliments to your very discerning ears! After Jon's review I did revisit the score and was able to appreciate that there actually is a lot going on here, you just need to closely focus to discern it. I acknowledge and appreciate Jon's reviewing acumen. Having said that, the music while creative, innovative and interesting does not seem emotive or ultimately satisfying. I will need to hear it in film context before I come down with a final verdict. It seems to me that the music needs to speak to the profound disparity between the impoverished terrestial life and utopian Elysium life. How it will do this without thematic content will prove interesting as I believe themes are needed to accomplish this. We all need to revisit after we take in the film. The proof will be in the viewing of the film. All the best my friend.

What do you mean, D? I picked out the sampled monkey chants, the Tuvan throat singers, the solo female vocalist, and the solo piano on my very first listen to the score. It's as clear as daylight.

No, no, you're right on these (well maybe it's part of why i don't go crazy over the score too: i have throat singing ) but i mean the way the whole article is written; like the score is really something very, very special; you know, like the way articles or interviews are written for every new Zimmer score post-Inception

How does this compare tonally with DISTRICT 9? I loved Shorter's work for that film and hoped Blomkamp would hire him again for this one.

Same here; was disappointed Shorter didn't work for him for this one although Shorter's scores post-District 9 aren't good at all to be honest.
