I love reading so naturally I was curious about e-readers when they came out. I have a two-year old Kindle Keyboard that I enjoy. I still buy the hardcover physical copies of my favorite authors (either when they come out or when I get around to it, used). I like using my Kindle to buy books I'm curious about, but usually wouldn't buy, when they are on sale or in a promotion (like the Kindle daily deal, etc.). The prices of e-books can be shocking at times and often times more expensive than the physical copy, which doesn't make sense but it may have to do with companies colluding to fix prices (Apple got scolded by a judge recently for this) and publishers not willing to give in to technology quite yet.
I find e-ink easy on the eye just as advertised, but I'm interested in tablets so I can get full color photos, book covers, maybe read comics, etc. to supplement my Kindle. I've never really read more than a few minutes on a tablet or my phone so I'm not sure how my eyes would handle it. Do any of you read books on a tablet? If so does it bother your eyes?
Tablets are getting less expensive with new models released every year to compete (especially the budget tablets). The original Nexus 7 is getting really cheap with the new one coming out tomorrow with higher specs and supposedly the best screen ever for a tablet. Advantage on the Nexus line is you get the newest version of android when it hits the market. I know the first Nexus 7 had a lot of quality control issues so I never considered one, but if they get irresistibly cheaper I may take the plug and risk it. Does anyone have any experience with the Nexus 7?
And then of course there are Barnes and Noble products. I don't like the looks of their e-readers and I've heard a lot of people have trouble with them not lasting more than a few months. They lost $500 million on their Nook line last year and already discontinued their Nook HD line after less than a year (although it sounds like they will have another company make them for them in the future). You can get a Nook HD+ with a 9" screen 16 gb of memory with an SD card slot that takes up to 32 gb more with access to Google Play for only $150 right now ($120 at Staples last week with a coupon). I was thinking about maybe picking one up in the future if they don't sell out. Does anyone have any experience with the Nook HDs?
Anyway. I'm not sure tablets have any real use other than they are fun. You can do everything on them you can do on your smart phone, you just can't make phone calls (except in extreme models). For me the temptation is the larger screen and you can more easily lug them around on vacation, etc. (compared to a laptop)
Thoughts?
