I really enjoyed his writing. The many films made from his work rarely matched the brilliance of his books. Very sad to lose him.

Obama's been President-elect for not even a full day and this is already happened? This is going to be a terrible Presidency.
Seriously, I had no idea he was sick. This is a very sad and unexpected loss indeed.

Just posted on this elsewhere. Really enjoyed many of his novels, particularly The Andromeda Strain, a classic; and while films of his novels adapted by others rarely worked, I really did enjoy his own efforts as director - particularly The Great Train Robbery, which is plain wonderful on every level. RIP.

I thought Coma was a creepily effective little movie too.

That's so sad, and shocking! I grew up on his books. I remember being on vacation as a kid and starting to read Sphere. And once I started, I couldn't put it down!

Yeah, Sphere is probably my favorite Crichton novel too.

Yeah, Sphere is probably my favorite Crichton novel too. Good film too. What is amazing about Crichton's work is how well they transitioned into film. Joe

I really did enjoy his own efforts as director - particularly The Great Train Robbery, which is plain wonderful on every level. RIP. Finally saw the film not too long ago and I was quite impressed with how well Crichton handled the film as a director. An incredibly fun little flick with Goldsmith's jaunty score alongside. Quite sad news about Crichton's death though. I was heartbroken when I read about his death late yesterday. A gem of a writer, Timeline, The Andromeda Strain and Sphere are still amongst my all time favorite reads.

I can thank Jurassic Park for getting me into reading when I was in 7th grade. If it wasn't for him, I'd probably still think books are lame and boring.

Wow, he went to Harvard Medical School and became one of the most successful American writers in history? Nice. I have a few books of him that remain unread, but I'm certainly prioritizing them, so no worries. Still, the guy gave me Jurassic Park. Freakin' dinosaurs. Thank you, Michael.

I haven't read a book of his for at least a decade, but I read a lot of them before that. Jurassic Park, Sphere, and the Great Train Robbery (much better book than film, IMO) were my favorites.
