my sister recently turned me on to the music of one Eric Whitacre, apparently a darling of the choral community, and just 35 or so years of age. I thought I would pass along a link to his website. his Myspace page has some of his outstanding work on it. I don't know the guy and I'm not shilling for him, just sharing the appreciation for good music. www.ericwhitacre.comoh, and I'm new in a manner of speaking; not to the site, but to Jon's board. I think I actually have a couple CD reviews buried within the bowels of the site. hello to all.

Yeah, he's great. Our Women's Glee Club performed his 5 Hebrew Love Songs. Just beautiful!

What the HELL is a "Glee Club"? And why does that name give me visions of people sitting round practicing looking smug, steepling their fingers and going "eeexcellent", like Mr Burns?

Haha! It's about time we Americans have an odd word or phrase that makes the Brits scratch their heads. A "Glee Club" is a choral ensemble...in most cases it's smaller than what you would think of a "chorus" to be. Glee Clubs run anywhere from say 10 to 35 members (some are much bigger). They sing a wide variety of music...the stereotypical Glee Club will sing more music in the popular vein (broadway tunes, lame pop choral arrangements, patriotic songs, etc.), but you will also find Glee Clubs performing very serious music as well. In fact, the United States Naval Academy Men's Glee Club performed with The Phoenix Symphony just this last March. They were an 80-voice all-male glee club and sang everything from Broadway showtunes to patriotic music to classical opera choruses as well. -Brendan p.s. Good to see you JJ!

So why "Glee Club?" Is it because everyone's so happy to be singing?

Maybe because we already have a symphonic choir and chorus.....
That would be a bit confusing....are you in choir or women's choir?
Glee club works. Oh yeah, we have somewhere around 100 members...perhaps 150.

Whitacre has done some outstanding work. Hearing "When David Heard..." in Freiburg Minster on a winter's night was a bone-chilling (as in jaw-dropping) experience to say the least.

This is so odd, I was about to start a thread about Whitacre. He is a genius, his music outstanding, the sounds that his choirs or orchestras produce are simply mesmerizing. I recommend absolutely everything that one can find by him. Even if you aren't a big fan of chorale music, that will change when you listen to Whitacre's music. Simply outstanding, he is highly recommended to everyone and anyone.

Ok, so he's talented and his music is well-liked by both film score and classical enthusiasts, but does the guy also need to look like David Beckham? I refuse to listen to his music as a matter of principle. Also, his MySpace selection doesn't seem to be playing for me (which happened with Goldenthal's MySpace only when I added it to my profile... hmm...). Haha! It's about time we Americans have an odd word or phrase that makes the Brits scratch their heads. Not so fast! According to good ol' Wikipedia: A Glee Club is a choir, historically of men but also of just women or mixed voices, which traditionally specializes in singing short songs. Glee clubs originated in England, but are no longer common in Britain; modern glee clubs are primarily found in North American colleges and universities. Glee in this context does not refer to the mood of the music or its singers, but to a specific form of English seventeenth and eighteenth century part song, the glee. Most American Glee Clubs are choruses in the standard sense and no longer perform glees.

My old friend Chris C. Tilton on MySpace. Haha... 4) Elijah Wood is on MySpace? Saw his recent film, Hooligans, the other day. Good film, but you Brits really have a problem regarding football. Especially those Millwallers...Jon, remember when you, PT and I were in London to do Howard Shore when Millwall played that other London club and like the entire city was forsaken? 5) Oh, look, Brendan is on MySpace. With Linus. *breaks down with nervous laughter* 6) Ford A. Tuba is not on MySpace. 7) Canadian people are hot and I had too much Blue Curacao in my Swimming Pool tonight. 8) I should go to bed soon. 9) That is all. CK
