I was just reading the great report of the World Soundtrack Awards and I've got to say I'm full of jealousy...no, not just because David Arnold was there ( ) but for the whole experience! I've wanted to go for the last couple of years now and I think anyone who is interested ought to start planning NOW. So, let's begin this as the official Ghent Gathering thread and see where it goes, no? Here's what we can be 90% sure of: -The Festival will be in Ghent -It will involve film music -It will take place in October -Michael Giacchino and other cool composers will most likely attend and may even be available for autographs/meet-and-greets. -I've never been to Belgium and I enjoy waffles So there. With those facts alone I'd say that's more than enough reason to go. Would any of my European friends care to share with me what airport would be the closest/cheapest to fly into and still be able to get to Ghent in a reasonable amount of travel time? Amsterdam maybe? So who's with me? -Brendan

For Americans almost any European airport is "close" to any other place in Europe. I think you also could just fly to Gent directly. Depending on your carrier you'd have a flight inside the US, then an intercontinental one to Euope (Amsterdam is ok, Paris also or Brussels), and then another short one to Gent. Alterntively you could have somebody pick you up on the way. Southern Germans who go with the car would go through Paris, Dutch and Danish people could do Amsterdam.
Personally I don't know where I'll be at that time and what I'll do, so I can't say for sure whether it's possible to be there or not. I will keep it in mind though.

Not enough money. But you have a whole year to budget for it! Let's break it down: Plane ticket to Amsterdam, if you put it on your fare-watcher for the next 6 months will undoubtedly get down to $400 or so eventually (it's about $650 now). Then figure another $50-$100 for the train ride to Ghent from Amsterdam (just over 100 miles). Once in Ghent, you'll be able to meet up with whoever else is gathered there and split the cost of lodging which, even in an expensive town like London, we were able to do for about 90 pounds per person (each person paid for a night for a total of 4 nights). I imagine Ghent would be a bit cheaper than that. So you've got: $400 airfare $100 train $150 lodging That's a great 4-day European trip and film music gathering for only $650 (cost of food doesn't count because even if you stayed in your apartment you'd still have to eat. ;D ). That's equivalent to about 35 CD's and I know you've purchased 35 CDs/DVDs in a year... So enough with the lame excuses people. Let's go to Belgium! Jon Broxton, Yavar Moradi, Chris Tilton and I once had a gathering at the Cheesecake Factory restaurant...it wasn't quite as cool as a gathering in, say, Royal Festival Hall in London. -Brendan

Well, I'd suggest Brussels as it's actually in Belgium and as its capital, it should have an international airport. However, Amsterdam would be so much more fun...

Count me in.
CK's right. You should be able to fly straight to Brussels (yes, it does have an international airport) and then your train ticket will cost, oh say, ten bucks maybe. Or fly to Paris, train from there to Gent is bound to be cheaper (train fares in Holland, if you fly to Amsterdam, are quite expensive).
Belgium is a great country. Lovely people, and very relaxing. The times I've been to the Filmfestival in Gent were fantastic. Not only do the Belgiums do nice waffles, they have great beers, and good food in general (can't go wrong with a simple, but lovely Croque Monsieur).
Just wondering, anything going in London between now and october 2006?

I recommend doing as close as you can by plane, as train tickets are considerably more expensive than one might think. I just found out today that the train from Berlin to Copenhagen costs more than 100 Euro, which is insane. Flying is a lot cheaper.
As for London, I'll definitely be going there in the next half year. Have to pick up some stuff I left last time. If there'd be some kind of gathering, even in a smaller circle, that'd be a good incentive to fix a date already.

As my wedding has been postponed a little bit (very early 2007, it seems now), I think I will be able to attend this gathering after all.
Brendan, please give me a call with the latest updates!

I might be around for this. So if you guys want to meet me please keep me updated as well. I can add to the Germanity through language, but not nationality.

You have to provide Germanity for both of us, Jens! We both know I'm far from the ideal candidate for providing "Germanity", really.
